Yes, this is a long read, and yes it’s about the You-Know-Who’s. But it says (verifies?) everything we instinctively don’t like about the Fixer Upper effect. The #shiplap hashtags, the national obsession, the gentrification, the whitewashing (literal and figurative), the rumblings of anti-LGBTQ religious stances, the bougie-ness, the very Instagrammable-ness of it all.
And while it’s all about Waco, Texas, it’s also about our towns. (Well, Beacon, cohost J’s town, at least. How about Milton/Marlboro, Rob?) Many towns. Many downtowns in any American city. How do we improve and build even better communities for everyone who lives there? How can we all come along for the ride? Can we do that while having some personal fun and individuality in design???
BTW, we’ll get over the Gaines eventually. It’s just that they, like this article, seem to sum up a lot of the conversational threads of the middle class home/garden/shelter/real estate sphere. We’ll be back to ogling hot gardeners or obsessing over wallpaper in a hot minute.
We haven’t forgotten you, dear listeners! Our April episode is in the works. We’re having a slight delay: Rob had the flu for a week, and his household’s copies of the April issue of BHG took their sweet-ass time getting through the USPS. apparently, Never fear, a new episode is coming to your #podcast feed during the week of April 2nd.
We haven’t been entirely inactive, though: we’ve been discussing some new promo ideas, and there will be more places you can come visit us in person this spring, including the Hudson Valley Creator Fest in Poughkeepsie on May 5th. Watch for more news!
In the meanwhile, enjoy a stiff drink and catch up on any back issues you may have missed. If you hear us going on and on about a hot trend from a year or so ago, let us know if our prediction/tag for love held up! You can always email us or post to us on Insta or FB.
Oops, is that headline misleading? To be clear, we are NOT part of the 2019 Kips Bay Decorator Show House. As if! No, we just want to go–it’s the interior design event of the year. Images from the house pop up in the mags, mood boards and blogs all year long. Hopefully we can go this May.
The list of participating designers was announced today and it’s a mix of A-list designers and newcomers. CBB favorite Corey Damon Jenkins is one of them so congrats Corey!
We’re looking forward to some amazing lewks and over-the-top ideas.
Are you planning on taking it in? (Phrasing, sorry!)
In our August 2018 episode, the magazine leaves us thirsty (only one beverage recipe, and it’s plain ole iced tea) so Rob creates his own signature cocktail–the Salty Be-otch–inspired by this month’s paint can lid hues. After sampling another array of excellent foods from Chef Tim, J. confesses that he forgot his magazine…and it’s all downhill from there. Before the pitchers of peach-flavored cocktails run out, we discuss hazardous ottomans, outdoor showers, the #partyboard trend that just won’t die, and monstrous ice cream. Plus, J. has a surprise crush on a featured chef. Say goodbye to your summer of regret!
Heads up, CBB fans! We’re taping a new episode of the show TONIGHT (Tuesday, May 22nd) and spilling the tea (and a cocktail or two) on what we think about the June issue of Better Homes & Gardens magazine. Drinking on a Tuesday night–what could go wrong? Be on the lookout for a full episode by the end of May.
Plus, we’ll both be traveling over Memorial Day weekend (to the same place!) so there will be some super-special travel bonus content coming to our Instagram Story, YouTube and this site soon.
What did you think of the June issue? Are you down with more #pink? What’s your signature cocktail for the month? Let us know in the comments or share on our Facebook page!
You and other listeners have downloaded episodes of Could Be Better more than 1,000 times–that’s amahzing! You Did It! Grab yourself a cocktail and celebrate with us–and hold on for a new full episode coming soon!
Hello party people! It’s the last weekend in April and the new issue of BHG (May) arrived in our mailboxes late last week. (We’re not in on the advance copies YET. Email us, Stephen Orr.) We had to push our recording session off to this weekend, though, because we are both ultra-busy this time of year. However, we worked out what our signature cocktail will be (hint: it’s in the magazine!) and bought the ingredients.
We’ll do a live Instagram story before we record (because you want to see us drinking, right?), and we need to create some video content for our NEW YouTube channel and the social media sites.
Plus, we’re going to record some extra-special content for a mid-month bonus episode…because waiting a whole month to talk with you is just too long. So, lots more to come! In the meantime, tell us what you’re drinking to celebrate the arrival of spring (about effin’ time, yes?)!
Hosts Rob Conlon and J. Dewey, two friends from New York’s Hudson Valley, have a mutual love and appreciation for Better Homes & Gardens magazine. In this podcast, they pour drinks and spill the tea about what they really think about the latest issue. It’s queer eye for the semi-straight-laced magazine. Tune in because your home and your garden can always be a little bit better than your neighbors’…and your best friend’s.
